Congratulations to the 2023 Spotlight on Excellence Award recipient Scott Taylor, a General Manager at the Lamont Public Utility District! Taylor recognized the need for clean drinking water in the Lamont water district and secured a total of $31M in grants to replace 3 aging wells and build a water treatment facility. Yesterday we held our Ice Cream Social, a summer tradition at CalPERS. The executive team and Board members handed out ice cream and thanked our team members for all the work they do throughout the year. Team members were able to take a few minutes out of their busy day to enjoy their treat and mingle.

“I needed help and didn’t come here thinking I

“I needed help and didn’t come here thinking I would actually retire, but now that I’ve done the paperwork and given a date, it feels pretty good.” Seventy-year-old social worker and grandmother Susan Carns was able to retire on the spot at our CalPERS Benefits Education Event (CBEE) in Eureka.

Kevin Harris, a CalPERS retirement counselor who assisted Carns in submitting her retirement application, says he loves helping members and “seeing the light go off in their heads when they realize they can either retire or are close to retirement and can still live comfortably.”

“It’s smiles everywhere when they realize that they are done working and didn’t have to figure it all out themselves,” Harris says. “Being able to provide that type of support as members move into the next phase of their lives is invaluable.”

Check out the changes to the Downtown Sacramento skyline! The first photograph was taken in 1986 right after construction was completed on our Lincoln Plaza North building. Today water saving mulch has replaced all of the grass and the trees create an urban oasis for birds.
