According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the physical health consequences of poor or insufficient social connection include:
- A 29% increased risk of heart disease
- A 32% increased risk of stroke
- A 50% increased risk of developing dementia for older adults
- A more than 60% increased risk of premature death
Many Americans are affected: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report about one in three adults report feeling lonely, and about one in four adults report not having social and emotional support. Everyone — at any age — is at risk for loneliness, but some people and groups are at higher risk.
The good news is one key to combatting loneliness is connection, and it can come in many forms.
