The CalPERS Board of Administration plays a critical role in helping us serve more than 2.3 million people. Coming up this fall, two Member-at-Large representative seats will be on the ballot in the CalPERS board election.
Board members make decisions throughout the year that affect you. For example, the board oversees investment strategies that earn the majority of the funds used to pay pension benefits; approves annual health care changes, including the premiums members pay and the benefits that accompany each health plan; and employer contribution rates, which ensure that pension payments are affordable. In short, the board’s decisions have a personal impact on members’ lives.
In total, there are 13 board member positions. Of those:
- Six are elected by varying constituent groups of members.
- Three are appointed by the governor and the Legislature.
- Four hold ex-officio positions, meaning they are part of our board because of another state office they hold.
Of the six elected positions, which serve a four-year term:
- Two represent all members (Member-at-Large).
- One represents classified school employee members.
- One represents public agency members.
- One represents retirees.
- One represents state employee members.
