"As he (my son) grows alongside my CalPERS career, "As he (my son) grows alongside my CalPERS career, I look forward to being an enduring and exceptional influence on his upbringing.” Before joining CalPERS Mike worked as a chef, a job that required 10 to 12-hour days even on nights and weekends. As his children grew, he realized his work was not sustainable. "I missed my kids' school events, their sports games, and even family gatherings and holidays like Mother's Day," he adds.

During the pandemic he joined CalPERS as an office technician (OT) in the Investment Office's Talent & Culture unit. Knowing he had more to offer, he joined our Upward Mobility Program and got the promotion he was hoping for before the program's end. Mike now has the time to spend with his family, even volunteering as a youth sports coach for his children’s teams.

“Developing positive relationships is the most e “Developing positive relationships is the most essential tool to success for change and growth,” Kiran explains the most valuable piece of advice her mentor Melody has given her. Kiran, who serves as the Health Plan Change Readiness Project Lead, was matched with Melody, Chief over the Pension Contracts and Prefunding Programs, through our Emerging Leader Program.
 
“My entire career has been impacted by mentors,” explains Melody, “I once had a mentor tell me ‘You can either step up and become the leader or you can train the next leader that is hired.’ I think that advice has stuck with me and guided me to be open and ready for the next challenge or opportunity.” 
 
The Emerging Leader Program is a six-month cohort program for journey-level analysts who aspire to a leadership position as the next step in their career at CalPERS. Participants are guided through a learning journey, gaining the experiences, exposure, and education that further prepare them to be ready and competitive for a formal leadership position.
