“I didn’t come here to do this — to submit my retirement application — but I figured this would help fill in the blanks,” he said at a CalPERS Benefits Education Event (CBEE) earlier this year in Riverside. “It turns out they were filled in so well I actually did it on the spot.”
Thousands of CalPERS members like Owens attend our complimentary CBEEs annually, which are held in-person throughout the state and virtually. The next one will be held in Sacramento on July 12 and 13.
“These member-focused events are at the heart of what we do,” said David Rubio, chief of our Customer Education and Outreach Division. “Whether retirement is a distant prospect, or right around the corner, CBEEs are tailored to meet you where you are, with your needs in mind.”
What’s a CBEE?
CBEEs are two-day events that feature classes specific to your career stage, and include:
- Our Retirement Benefits
- Health Benefits
- Save & Invest
- Social Security
- myCalPERS & Your Retirement Options
“From early-career guidance on maximizing your additional savings options, to navigating your health benefits into retirement, you can design your day to gather the most relevant information for you,” Rubio said.
These events also feature a room called Ask the Experts that hosts representatives from CalPERS and partner organizations, including our health plan providers, Savings Plus, and our own retirement benefits counselors such as Richard DePaola, pictured above with Owens.
But don’t just take our word for it. Check out these CalPERS members’ experiences in this article from our Riverside CBEE in early 2024.
Why Should I Attend?
We know that not everyone learns the same way. While reviewing our detailed list of benefit publications works for some, others may benefit from in-person access to the information, presented by a live person.
“Perks of being a CalPERS member include access to industry-leading retirement and benefits, but taking advantage of them requires knowing what’s available, and how it applies to you,” Rubio said. “What’s relevant to a 28-year-old city employee may not be the same as a 55-year-old school librarian with retirement on the horizon.”
How Can I Sign Up?
To register visit our CBEE website and submit your email address. Walk-ins are also welcome to this free event.
Subscribe to our Member Education Bulletin to be notified of future educational events in your region.
What Happened to Hurley Owens?
Hurley Owens, a bureau manager for the City of Long Beach parks department, will reach his goal of retiring in 2024. He’s been a civil servant his whole career, which includes four years in the Army, and 26 years with the city.
His retirement date is June 1, 2024, and he’s set income-wise, with his CalPERS pension, his 457(b) plan, and income from a rental.
“I’m so excited I don’t know what to do, but I need another chapter in my life at this point,” he said. “I would hate to die with my boots on.”
