Diabetes Symptoms Are Often Cloaked — Learn to Recognize the Risks

Did you know that before developing type 2 diabetes, most people have prediabetes? About 98 million people, or one in three, have the condition — and most don’t know it.

Prediabetes is a serious health condition that increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. If left untreated, it can turn into type 2 diabetes, which affects every major organ in the body and doubles the risk of depression.

The good news is all CalPERS health plans offer a diabetes prevention program at no cost to eligible members. It’s designed to slow and prevent type 2 diabetes among CalPERS members with prediabetes — a condition in which a person’s blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be considered diabetic.

The curriculum promotes realistic lifestyle changes, emphasizing weight loss through exercise, healthy eating, and behavior modification. Sessions are led by trained lifestyle coaches who will empower you to take charge of your health and focus on lasting results.

What Are the Risk Factors for Prediabetes?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anyone can develop prediabetes at any age. But you may have a higher risk if you:

  • Have a family history of type 2 diabetes.
  • Are over age 45.
  • Have overweight or obesity.
  • Had gestational diabetes (diabetes when pregnant).
  • Have high blood pressure.
  • Are a Hispanic/Latino, Black, Asian American, or Native American person.

Should I Get Tested?

Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes often don’t have symptoms, so if you’re at risk, it’s important to get tested through a simple blood sugar test. Ask your doctor if you should be tested.
