Private Equity International recently named CalPERS Limited Partner of the Year in North America for 2023. This is the second year in a row that CalPERS has received the award recognizing it as one of the “best and most successful” firms in the private equity industry.
“The CalPERS Private Equity team works hard every day to achieve outstanding returns for our members,” said Anton Orlich, managing investment director for Private Equity. “We are honored that our peers in the industry have recognized CalPERS for its achievements as we continue to focus on strengthening the pension fund.”
Orlich rejoined CalPERS in October 2022 to build and scale a co-investment program, and to diversify the alternatives portfolio to include venture, growth, and diverse and emerging managers.
Private Equity International noted that CalPERS earned the award by delivering on its primary goals to scale co-investment, diversify its portfolio, and back diverse and emerging managers. In fiscal year 2022-23, private equity accounted for $60.2 billion of CalPERS’ total fund. As of June 2023, the rate of return for this asset class stood at 11% since its inception.
The annual PEI Awards honor various achievements throughout the industry. PEI editors short-list nominees, and industry professionals vote for winners through verified work accounts. Approximately 13,000 votes were cast for this year’s awards recognizing institutions throughout the world.
