CalPERS Partnership Delivers More Primary Care Choices in Shasta Area

CalPERS members in the Redding area have greater access to primary care doctors thanks to a new agreement between CalPERS, Shasta Community Health Center, and Blue Shield of California.

As of March 1, members can now select from dozens of primary care physicians at Shasta Community Health Center (SCHC), a federally qualified health center with six locations in rural Northern California, including Redding, Anderson, and Shasta Lake City. SCHC has served the region since 1988.

“This step not only increases local health care options for our Blue Shield members, but also demonstrates our dedication to finding solutions to statewide health care problems,” said Chief Health Director Don Moulds.

How Primary Care Elevates Your Health

Primary care is a vital component of health care, and one that has become increasingly scarce in rural portions of California.  It’s where members receive preventive screenings, manage ongoing conditions, and build relationships with providers who understand their health history.

Services at the SCHC main Redding campus include preventive medical care, pediatrics, behavioral health, urgent care, maternity care, and specialty consultations.

Increased access to primary care is linked to better health outcomes, higher patient satisfaction, and better coordinated care, according to the California Health Care Foundation. For Blue Shield members, this means more opportunities to stay healthy and receive care tailored to their individual needs.

Bringing Care Closer

Health care access has historically been limited by distance and provider availability for many living in rural California. These challenges can make maintaining regular checkups and managing ongoing health needs more difficult. By partnering with SCHC, CalPERS and Blue Shield are helping to bring care closer to home for members in the Shasta area.

Members who are interested in obtaining primary care through Shasta Community Health can explore the services it offers and find out more about their coverage by calling Blue Shield member support listed on the back of their ID cards.
