Public Agency Members: Most PEPRA Contribution Rates Are Increasing on July 1

Active CalPERS member taking notes on PEPRA rate changes

As a public agency active PEPRA member, your member contribution rate may increase beginning with your July 1 pay period. This is the member contribution rate that funds your lifetime pension benefit.

Under the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) law, PEPRA employees must pay half the plan total normal cost. The normal cost is the amount to fund your annual pension benefits for the upcoming fiscal year. This means 95% of public agency rate plans will see an increase to their PEPRA member contribution rate.

PEPRA members are those hired on or after January 1, 2013.

Rates May Change Each Year

This rate increase is only for the 2023-24 fiscal year that begins on July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024. However, if your employer’s payroll ends on July 1 or later you will see the increase of your member contribution earlier in your paycheck, even if all the time you worked was in the prior fiscal year. These rates can decrease, stay the same, or increase in any given year.

No Impact to Classic Members

This does not impact classic member contribution rates that are set by the law and are specific to classic retirement benefit formulas.
