Our Board Membership Has Changed

ICYMI: The CalPERS Board of Administration has welcomed four new members and voted in their 2019 president and vice president.

Four new CalPERS Board of Administration members started their terms this year:

Fiona Ma, California’s new treasurer, is one of the board’s four ex officio members. She previously served as a member of the California Board of Equalization, the California State Assembly, and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Fiona replaced John Chiang, the outgoing state treasurer.

Eraina Ortega, director of California’s Department of Human Resources (CalHR), was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in March 2019. She has 20 years of experience in public service, most recently serving California as inspector general in the Office of Audits and Investigations (Department of Transportation) and as chief deputy director of policy in the Department of Finance.

Jason Perez was elected last fall to represent our active public agency members, most of whom are employed by cities, counties, and special districts. He is a sergeant with the Corona Police Department, president of his police officer association, and has been a CalPERS member for more than 27 years. Jason replaced Priya Mathur.

Mona Pasquil Rogers, representing the State Personnel Board (SPB), is another ex officio member. She was appointed to the SPB January 3 after serving in the offices of Governor Jerry Brown and Lt. Governor John Garamendi. She also acted as lieutenant governor upon Garamendi’s election to Congress. Mona replaced Richard Costigan.

New Board President and Vice President

At January’s offsite meeting, board members voted in their 2019 president and vice president:

Henry Jones, who represents retired members, was elected president. Henry is serving his third term on the board and his first term as its president. For the past three years he served as vice president of the board.

Theresa Taylor, who represents state members, was elected vice president. She has been a board member since 2015 and is serving her second term.

New Committee Chairs and Vice Chairs

The Board elected the chairs and vice chairs of four key committees during February’s board meeting:

  • Investment Committee — Bill Slaton, Chair; Rob Feckner, Vice Chair
  • Finance & Administration Committee — Theresa Taylor, Chair; David Miller, Vice Chair
  • Risk & Audit Committee — Dana Hollinger, Chair; David Miller, Vice Chair
  • Performance, Compensation, & Talent Management Committee — Theresa Taylor, Chair; Dana Hollinger, Vice Chair

Committee chairs and vice chairs for the Board Governance Committee and the Pension & Health Benefits Committee, respectively, will be named at the March board meeting.
