Help Us Improve Mental Health Services

CalPERS is partnering with the UC Davis Center for Healthcare Policy and Research to learn more about our members’ access to mental health services provided by their health plan.

CalPERS is interested in hearing from you if you or your family tried to use or received mental health services through your CalPERS health plan during 2020. To learn about your experiences, UC Davis will be administering a survey and following the survey, will hold subsequent focus groups.

How the Survey Works

You may receive an email from us with a link inviting you to participate in the survey. The survey will be available for three weeks from October 25 to November 15, 2021. The survey will take less than 15 minutes and is voluntary and anonymous.

You can help us improve mental health services by taking the survey if you or your dependents attempted to obtain or received mental health services through your CalPERS health plan.

Keep in mind, you can participate in the survey even if you did not receive services but tried to!

Why We Need to Hear From You

Your feedback and responses are vital to help us find potential barriers, challenges, and inequities in accessing mental health services. We need to hear this important information from you in order to make changes to improve mental health services for you and for everyone across all of our health plans.

We will use your feedback to help us better understand our health plans’ mental health services and identify:

  • Barriers to accessing services
  • Disparities and inequities in care
  • Differences among our health plans’ mental health services
  • Satisfaction with the mental health services provided by your health plan

Once we gather this information, we will consult with experts in behavioral health benefit design and strategize actions to improve access and member experiences with mental health services.

When and Where This Takes Place

The survey and focus group will be conducted in a virtual environment:

  • The survey will launch October 25 and will run for three weeks
  • UC Davis will schedule the focus groups to start in early December

How Focus Groups Work

You may also choose to participate in a 45-minute online focus group to discuss your experiences accessing mental health services and to help identify potential disparities across CalPERS health plans. If you wish to participate, you may indicate so at the end of the survey, or you can fill out a form on the UC Davis Study Pages.

Your participation in the survey is anonymous, confidential, and entirely voluntary, and it will not impact your CalPERS benefits in any way.

CalPERS employees, dependents, spouses, domestic partners, and dependent children are not eligible to participate in this survey or focus groups, and are not eligible to receive any compensation related to the survey or focus groups.
