Did you know 55% of California adults have prediabetes or diabetes?
Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Prediabetes increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which can lead to heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, and amputations. Most people with prediabetes don’t realize they have it; however, weight loss, diet change, and exercise can help prevent the onset of diabetes.
To help members prevent diabetes, CalPERS requires all health plans to offer a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to eligible adult members at no additional cost. The DPP is a standardized 12-month lifestyle change program targeted to those with prediabetes, where a coach provides education and motivation through online or in-person sessions.
Health plans have had outstanding success in improving the health of CalPERS members with prediabetes. For example, at Kaiser Permanente, 12,000 CalPERS members have enrolled in the DPP with a total weight loss over 97,000 pounds since program inception.
Ask your health care provider or health plan if you have prediabetes and if you meet the eligibility criteria for the DPP. It could change your life.
Testimonials from CalPERS members enrolled in a DPP:
I’ve already lost 30 pounds, while maintaining a healthy diet. I eliminated all trigger foods and increased dramatically the amount of fruit and low-calorie vegetables I eat. I certainly credit [the DPP] with keeping me going, increasing my exercise, and helping to overcome the barriers that we all come up against when trying to keep to a good diet.
I started off walking around the block. I started to incorporate eating more fruits and vegetables. I feel like I’m in charge now. The food is not controlling me. I am now controlling the food…. A couple days ago I jogged 2.67 miles and I hadn’t done that in 30 years…. This program is probably one of the best things that ever happened to me. I think I’m doing better at my job because I have more energy…. You are making a lifestyle change in small steps and all those things put together make a difference. How much difference? Eighty-four pounds and counting.
