CalPERS November 2020 Board Meeting Preview

This month the CalPERS Board will meet Monday, November 16, to Wednesday, November 18, via livestream as all board members and presenters will be participating from their respective remote locations.

The livestream can be viewed on the CalPERS website.

The board meetings are open to the public and comments are welcome. Comments can be submitted via telephone by calling (800) 259-4105.

Recordings will be posted to the CalPERS YouTube channel approximately 48 hours after the meetings end.

Full agendas are posted on our website, but here is a brief overview of the items the board will hear this month:

Monday’s Meeting

On Monday, November 16, the Investment Committee will hear Climate Risk Change Strategy. The presentation looks at the CalPERS portfolio and investment strategy on climate change, sustainable investment strategy, and engagement, advocacy and integration topics.

Tuesday’s Meeting

On Tuesday, November 17, the Pension & Health Benefits Committee will hear proposals on new health plans, benefit designs, and service area changes for approval.

These include proposed health plans for 2022 Anthem Blue Cross service area expansion; Blue Shield of California’s new 58-county Medicare Advantage plan and service area expansion; UnitedHealthcare’s new Medicare Advantage plan; and Western Health Advantage’s new Medicare Advantage plan.

The committee will also hear a report on Risk Mitigation concerning recommendations on how to mitigate risk to CalPERS Basic Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) health plans.

The Finance & Administration Committee is slated to present the Annual Review of Funding Levels and Risks Report. The report goes over the funding position and risk of falling to low funding levels, and employer contributions over the next few years.

Wednesday’s Meeting

On Wednesday, November 18, the Performance, Compensation & Talent Management Committee will hear presentations on Incentive Compensation Recommendations and Financial Interest Separation Requirements for the chief investment officer position.

Also, on tap is the Board Governance Committee hearing a report on the proposed 2021 board and committee meeting dates.

No meetings are scheduled for the remainder of 2020. The 2021 dates will be made available on our Board Meetings Calendar page.
