CalPERS June 2020 Board Meeting Preview

This month the CalPERS Board will meet Monday, June 15, to Wednesday, June 17, via a livestream broadcast. All board members and presenters will be participating from their respective remote locations. The livestream can be viewed on the CalPERS website.

The board meetings are open to the public and comments are welcome. Comments can be submitted in person at our auditorium at CalPERS Headquarters (400 Q Street, Sacramento, California) or via telephone by calling (800) 259-4105. Those who wish to provide comment in the auditorium will be escorted to a microphone that will be connected to a computer on the event call.

A recording will be posted to the CalPERS YouTube channel approximately 48 hours after the meeting ends.

Full agendas are posted on our website, but here is a brief overview of the items the board will hear this month:

Monday’s Meeting

On Monday, June 15, the Investment Committee will hear the first report regarding the recommendations of the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD).This report sets out the goal of CalPERS’ investment strategy on climate change to ensure the portfolio is resilient to risk and positioned for the investment opportunities that the energy transition brings, in line with the target rate of return.

The committee will also get the Asset Liability Management Mid-Cycle Review. The review reflects current economic conditions, market valuation, and capital market assumptions as compared to the 2017/18 estimates.

Tuesday’s Meeting

On Tuesday, June 16, the Pension & Health Benefits Committee will hear about the 2021 Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and 2020 Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) proposed health premium rates. The Board will approve rates in July.

The committee will also hear a report on the challenges and potential changes facing the Long-Term Care Program.

Wednesday’s Meeting

On Wednesday, June 17, the Risk & Audit Committee will hear the Quarterly Status Report of audit activity.

The Board Governance Committee will consider adoption of the proposed changes to the approval and reporting processes in the Board Travel Policy.

And the Board of Administration will hear reports from Board President Henry Jones and CEO Marcie Frost.

July Board Meeting

The next board meeting occurs July 13-15 and will be livestreamed on CalPERS website.
