Newly Elected President and Vice President
Jones joined the CalPERS Board in 2008 and is serving his third term. He was elected by retired members. Taylor represents state members on the CalPERS Board. She joined the board in 2015 and was just elected to her second term.
Additionally, three new board members were sworn in. Fiona Ma, the newly elected California Treasurer, officially joined the board. In addition, Jason Perez, elected as the public agency member representative, and Mona Pasquil Rogers, who was selected as the State Personnel Board representative, were also sworn in.
Also on Tuesday, the Investment Committee heard from Ben Meng, CalPERS’ chief investment officer. He provided an overview of the challenges and opportunities facing the CalPERS fund, and he also laid out his plan for his first 180 days. Ben joined CalPERS on January 2.
On Wednesday, the board focused on health care. One key topic was exploring better ways to provide care to members in rural California. There was a presentation from Covered California’s Executive Director Peter Lee and the Commonwealth Fund’s Vice President Shawn Bishop about the Affordable Care Act implementation and predictions for future insurance regulations. The board also heard about the benefits of competition within the health care industry.
On Thursday, January 24, the National Association of Corporate Directors presented an overview on fiduciary training and other important topics.
The next CalPERS Board meeting is February 19 through 21 at CalPERS’ headquarters in Sacramento. The board meeting notice is available 10 days prior to the first meeting and includes agendas for all three days.
